The club has been rather busy this month with our regular training sessions and also a couple of events. On 21st May our long overdue Junior barbecue and match for the Juniors vs the Parents was held very succesfully. Thanks to everyone who attended and made the event a thoroughly enjoyable one for all. I believe the kids had great fun in thrashing the parents who only managed to score one rather feeble consolation try at the very end of the match.
Perhaps more fun for the Seniors was had last weekend, 28th May, with a match against Dansoman, last seasons runners up and winners of the corresponding league match back in November. In the end ARC/IDAS ran out comfortable winners 27 - 17 with the match providing more valuable experience for our newer players. This result gives us some hope for next season and if we continue to train hard and work on our matchplay we should be competitive again next season.
To finish off our busy period we have an away match this weekend in Cape Coast against a Cape Coast All Stars team. The venue is Robert Mensah Stadium (the new one I believe) with Kick Off around 10:00. Lets try and continue our good form from the Dansoman match and finish of with another win.
A good weekend with an excellent turn out for Juniors followed by an Accra Barbarians match against the national squad. Although the Barbarians were well beaten in the end we all had a lot of fun and put the national team under quite some pressure for sustained periods of the match. Hopefully the guys in the national team will have got a good warm up before they head to Burkina Faso in a few days for the tournament.
So it came to the grand final for 2015. Unfortunately we were not able to recreate last years efforts and retain our title but we faced a good strong team in Cosmos. Truth be told there was very little difference between the two teams with only three points separating the sides with only five minutes left. In the end Cosmos were better able to capitalise on our mistakes than we were on theirs....the final score 19 - 9 to Cosmos. Congrats to Cosmos and well done to IDAS for a strong season...lets learn our lessons, train hard and come back stronger next season.
Man of the Match Ernest Hanson
Cape Coast proved themselves to be little challenge so a place in the final of the GRCC has been secured!! Next week we'll be taking on Cosmos for the third time this season with the head to head record standing at one game a piece...so this is winner takes all. The match vs Westside was won by a dominant forward effort with most of our tries coming from good driving play. After coming close for a couple of weeks the man of the match was won this week by Amin for a great performance from the back of the scurm. Well done Amin, lets see the same effort on Saturday and hopefully we'll all go home as champions!
Man of the Match Amin
Another comfortable win and another sub par performance. IDAS ran out easy winners against Tema 48 - 10 but the second hal followed the same patter as recent matches with a below par performance due to complacency and playing as individuals instead of a team. After last weeks result against Titans we were relying on Cosmos to do us a favour which they duly did meaning Cosmos and ourselves go through to the semi finals next week against the Cape Coast teams. We need to seriously up our performance in order to build confidence ahead of the expected final a week later against Cosmos. In terms of Man of the Match it was hard this week to settle on one individual and apart from Jalilu who had a good game at full back none of the backs put in a good performance. The pack had the upper hand against their counterparts in most aspects of play although the rucks were rather messy with too many hanging out instead of securing the ball. In the end I settled on a unit nomination for the back row as they scored several of our tries and put in some powerful running.
Man of the Match The Back Row
It seems a little ungrateful to say that a 70 - 0 win was dissappointing but it certainly felt that way on Saturday. After a disciplined and hard working first half where we played some nice rugby and scored 43 unanswered points the second half was sloppy to put it mildly. Partly we were dragged down to their level but we allowed this to happen and against better teams it would cost us! We now have a big game next week which might make or break our season, win and we're in the semi finals, lose and we have to sweat until then end of the last regular season match between Cosmos and Titans. With the dramatic difference between first and second half it wasn't easy to pick a MotM this week but there were good performances from Amin at the base of the scrum and good showings from both centre's. I'm sure a lot of hard work was done unseen by our pack but in the end due to a few tries and some barnstorming runs MotM goes this week to Kelechi Onwunta just edging out his centre partner Dan.
Man of the Match: Kelechi Onwunta
Fantastic game today against our old rivals Cosmos. Always a tough team to beat and despite being 12-0 down with only 10 minutes or so to play we managed to pull a great win out of the bag with two late tries to seal the win. Our play in the first half deserved more points and we will need to be more clinical in our finishing but I can't fault the heart and spirit shown to keep going right until the end. As a result of the game it is very hard to single out one individual this week so for committment and will to win the MotM this week is the whole team!
22nd December - Half Term Report
The junior section has been a revelation in the first part of the season. In the last two years we have had a few well attended sessions but no consistency and quite a disparity in the ages of the kids involved. So far this season the attendance has been excellent with probably an average of 15 kids each week and general much closer in age. To complement the numbers of kids attending we have had a great coaching team managed for the most part by Fred, Brice and Chris with help from a few others. It has been invaluable that we now have a bigger coaching team for the juniors meaning we are always able to have someone available even when some are travelling or tied up with work. The benefit of this can clearly be seen as the kids are enjoying the rugby and coming along regularly as a result. Hopefully we can continue to grow the numbers and ideally add a few more local children in the second half of the season. It would also be good in the second half of the season to try and arrange some event or friendly match...something for the kids to aim for.
Overall the seniors can be happy with the first half of the season in terms of the league. We managed to beat Titans for the first time in a friendly and then again when it mattered in the last round of the league. our discipline remains good for the most part, at least a cut above our competition and we have the making of an excellent pack. The depth of our squad is also encouraging as last year certain players missing would have really hurt us but for the most part we can cope with one or two absent players. The one main downside was our loss to Cosmos where we were competitive for 40 minutes but had a sleepy 20 minutes allowing them to score too many unanswered points....to be fair injuries did not help us in that match either. Apart from this our main problem has been scoring points when we have been in control...we should have scored more against Cosmos, Tema and Dansoman.....hopefully this will not cost us at the end of the season. Overall the biggest negative for the seniors has been training or lack of it. In order to improve as a team we must train more regularly. You can see the likes of Titans and Cosmos look more like a team because they train together. Just think what our pack could do if we added team training on top of the natural ability? The same is true with our backs....we have potentially a good mix of size, speed and experience in the backs but to bring that all on to the field we need to train together. So, overall a decent first half of the season, we must look to back that up when the league resumes in January.
8th December - The final match of the first half of the league saw a great result with a hard fought win over our old nemesis Legon Titans. Considering we were missing one or two experienced players this makes the result more enjoyable and sets us up well for the second half of the season! We must ensure we use the break to train!!
23rd November - Yesterday saw another busy day up at the club with a well attended junior session followed by the latest round of league matches. A big thanks to the junior coaches who are doing a great job at the moment as evidenced by the growing numbers and enthusiasm shown by the kids! For the seniors IDAS secured a good win against one of the weaker teams running out 31-0 winners. Tema provided a stiffer challenge than expected mainly due to being persistently offside and ensuring poor quality ball for most of the match. Next week is a crunch game against Titans and the last match before the mid league break over Christmas. A win would leave IDAS second in the league close behind the pace setters Cosmos.
15th November - Junior sessions continued to be well attended which is great to see. Seniors have had a couple of mixed weeks with a bit of a thumping from Cosmos last week after some sleepy play but a great result this week against Dansoman, another tough team. The team is coming along well and if we keep improving we should hopefully be around for the finals at the end of the season.
1st November - Well the league started with more of a whimper than a bang! No game for IDAS although we at least had a friendly against the Titans who we finally managed to beat! Should have won more convincingly but we'll take a win whichever way it comes! Next week a big match with Cosmos....come on guys lets get our first win on the board this season!
28th October - The 7's tournament at the weekend went rather as expected due to our lack of training so 4th place was not so bad. The serious stuff starts this weekend with the first round of the mens 15 aside league taking place at our pitch. IDAS are up against Sharks and need to use this game for a warm up in order to be ready to face Cosmos the following week!
18th October - Another great junior session today followed by a friendly match between ARC/IDAS and Legon Titans....Titans continue to be our bogey team as we went down
28 - 14. A combination of Titans showing better cohesion and rustiness on our part gave Titans the win. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes in time for the league in two weeks time!!
11th October - Junior training continues to go from strength to strength with 18 kids this week and hopefully more to come! Seniors is improving slowly and there is a full calendar of events to look forward to including a friendly next weekend against the Titans, the GARA 7's the following week and then the start of the new league! Things are looking up.
28th September - Junior training has now been up and running three weeks and numbers are encouraging. With two coaches now it should ensure we are able to run sessions every weekend. For seniors number are also improving but with the new league just round the corner we still need more people to work on unit skills etc. Come on guys make the effort! The dates for the new league are now confirmed with the first round of matches on 1st November. For more details see the fixtures page.
13th September - Finally a new update!! It's been quiet over the Summer with many people away but training is back and numbers getting stronger! You'll note over the Summer we had a few departures so the Committee is looking a bit threadbare but new names will be posted soon. Junior training will resume very soon and the new league is set to kick off in the near future so lots of activity to look forward to at the club! Hope to see you all there soon.
13th April - EASTER UPDATE: Due to the Easter holidays training is cancelled for the weekend of 19th April for both Juniors and Seniors, training will resume on 26th April for both Juniors and Seniors.
8th February - Another great result through hard work saw IDAS beat Dansoman in a tough, close game, our last match of the current season. The final score was 8 - 7 and combined with the win by Comos against Titans meant that IDAS are this seasons Champions!!!! Well done to everyone involved, more hard work needed to defend the trophy next year.
27th January - A fantastic result was achieved on Saturday by the IDAS team beating last years league champions, Cosmos, in a mighty struggle. The match finished 8 - 5 and both defenses were strong limiting the chances for either side. Both teams had penalty opportunities but in the end it was Mohamed the IDAS kicker who managed to nail one near the end of the match to seal the win. This puts IDAS in a good position to be league champions with one game to go.
11th January - Back with a bang!! After I hope a good Christmas break for everyone the club returned to activity with a bang on Saturday. A junior session with good attendance for the New year was run before the club hosted the second round of the GRA League for 2013/14. IDAS were first match up against a Cape Coast team, Aggrey. Despite being very rusty the team put up a great performance winning 57 - 0! Still a lot to work on ahead of our next match at Cape Coast with Cosmos Buffaloes which is going to be tough!!
15th December - NEWSFLASH! IDAS won their first league match of the new season the final score was either 26 or 29 - 7 so pretty good considering the game was only 40 minutes!
9th December - The first round of the new league is coming up rapidly with our first match against old rivals Accra Sharks!
18th November - OK folks, back with some news. You will see that our sponsor page has a new addition, thanks to Gras Savoye for the insurance! Also the fixture page has been updated to reflect the league fixtures and couple of other matches we hope to play in the coming weeks.
8th November - NEWSFLASH!! GRA announce the dates for the next 15 a side league with the first round of matches taking place 14th December in Accra. Any senior players interested in playing and not yet registered please let the club know as soon as possible!
19th October - Great news to report that the global logistics experts Bollore Africa logistics have been kind enough to sponsor the club with a substantial sum of money that will be put toward improving the facilities once the situation with the university is resolved!! A big thanks to Bollore for investing in the future of the club! Also on the subject of money can all players bth junior and senior try to pay their membership in the near future....Juniors is GHS 75 per year and Seniors is GHS 150 for the year. All the money will go towards keeping the club running and our kit etc. up to scratch.
10th October - Just to advise that Junior traiing will resume this week and hopefully be weekly thereafter. Please get the kids along so we can ensure good and active sessions!
28th September - NEWS FLASH!! A small news item is that the turning from the road to the pitch has been closed off by bollards so you now need to turn a little earlier than before.
Another good training session this week let's keep the numbers growing! Next week we hope to restart the junior sessions...news will come by e-mail as usual.
15th September - Finally an update!!! After a bit of a lull in activity things are up and running at the club again with a great training session this weekend with 20+ people for the first time in ages. In the near future we should restart the junior session and hopefully have a lot of news about developments at the club. Keep an eye on the website or Facebook!
16th June - NEWSFLASH! This is to confirm that the season is now officially closed for Accra Rugby Club. The new season will resume sometime in August with the date to be confirmed. The last season has been a pretty active one with a total of six 15 a side matches and a seven a side tournament. 3rd place in both the league and the sevens is not a bad result although I'm sure we could have achieved more with a little more concentration. Next season we aim to improve further with more matches and improving skills levels! See you all fit and ready to go in a few weeks time!!
15th June - Congratulations to those players who were involved with the National Team in the recent tournament. From the reports it sounded like Ghana performed creditably and with more experience the results can only keep getting better!!
8th May - A rather dissapointing performance saw IDAS finish third in the league behind Cosmos and the Titans...never mind, better luck next time guys. Here is a link to a newspage with some info on the matches... http://sportsinghana.com/cosmos-buffalos-win-maiden-rugby-15s-league/
4th May - Last league match of this season against the university and a win will secure second place in the first 15 a side league! Let's make it hapen.
21st April - An interesting couple of weeks rugby! Two weeks ago we were taught a lesson losing 37 - 0 to the Buffaloes (a much changed team for the one we beat though). This week we turned it arond with a great win over the Sharks...52 - 0, probably would have been more if the scrums hadn't gone uncontested. We certainly need to work hard to ensure we win our last game against the University.
23rd March - A win at last!!! Well done to everyone yesterday involved in our first win since reformation. It was a hard fought win over a good side so very nice to come out on top of Cosmos 21 - 19. Overall our play was much better than previous games and discipline was improved but still some work to be done. Thanks to Cosmos for making the game possible and to Brendan for another good refereeing performance under trying circumstances! If you can manage these kind of games anything else should be a piece of cake :-) And last but not least thanks to Samad for organising the match with Cosmos.
We now have a break next week due to Easter but we'll come back ready to train hard on 6th April. Rumour has it that the league will start on 13th April so we may need to be ready for a match very soon!
18th March - Satutrday (16th) saw a group of enthusiastic workers at the club in order to give the place a new coat of paint. The job isn't quite finished but the main work has been done with a few finishing touch's to go! We can all see how nice it looks next Saturday when we have another match against new opposition! Thanks to Samad for arranging the fixture, we should have Cosmos Buffaloes coming to the club for a match.
27th February - Some fresh news at last! Saturday saw our latest match against the University which was another close game but unfortunately another loss. The game got a little silly toward the end but overall some good rugby was played and hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves. It was another good learning opportunity and if we can manage to play for longer like we did in patches then we should start to win games sooner rather than later. I feel some hard sessions on the scrum machine coming up :-)
Some further news is to anounce two members to our committee, Patrick Amalvy and Willem Van Der Sanden who replace Joel and Neil who left us last year. With the committee strengthened we hope to push on with some of the projects such as improving access to water, tidying up the club house and getting more fixtures organised....we'll be in touch with developments soon.
14th February - Quick Update, match against the University is still scheduled for 23rd February. Let's get as many players available as possible!
3rd February - About time for another update!! Training has resumed after the Xmas break and numbers are picking up nicely. We have a friendly match against the university planned for 23rd February so let's keep the training numbers growing.
Rumour also has it that the Accra fifteen a side league will start in March.....which March has not been confirmed.
Six nations has started yesterday with wins for Ireland and England, France play Italy today n the last match of the first round. Watch the matches if you can...good to see what professional players are doing in a match.
Finally and a little late, congrats to the guys that took part with IDAS in the Accra Sevens just before Xmas after a third place finish, good job guys!!!
10th December - The club is officially on Christmas break now until January, I hope you all enjoy you're Chritmas and New Year with your families and come back ready for more rugby in 2013! Wishing you all a Merry Christmas!
Another piece of news is the Accra Sevens taking place 15h December, 09:00 at the Ajax Sports Stadium near the University of Ghana. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Samad / IDAS Sports.
13th October - Hopefully an enjoyable day was had by all on Saturday with our second match in a few months. Unfortunately we lost but it was good close game and hopefully everybody had a good chance to learn from the match and brush up on their skills!
There are some good photo's of the match which I'll be loading a select few on to the site later this week and on to FB also so keep watching!
23rd September - About time for some new news!! The last two weeks have seen really good numbers at training especially last week (15th) with 17 juniors and almost 40 seniors! Other developments have seen the arrival of a scrum machine (thanks to Orsam!) and also a variety of kit such as shirts, boots, gumshields etc courtesy of the Bao'Baas organisation who help support the development of rugby in Africa.
Now we have all this kit we need to get some games to see how we're improving....as luck would have it we have a training match planned against the University on 13th October so please make sure you all come training between now and then so we can really work hard on our skills and team work!
20th June - As circulated via E-mail two of our founding members have / will be leaving us over the summer due to new adventures elsewhere in Africa. It's important that the club acknowledges the important part that Denis Martin and Joel Gallato have played in helping re-establish the Accra Rugby Club as we are today....hopefully those of us remaining can build on the foundations that they helped establish and really assist in the development of rugby within Accra and Ghana. Many thanks Denis and Joel, we wish you all the best with your new challenges, you'll be missed!!
On a similar note we should also note that Neil McMahon has unfortunately left Ghana and, although not one of the very original guys like Denis and Joel, Neil has been one of our stalwarts in terms of attending training and being an active member of the club from quite early on so we also wish Neil all the best with the future.
9th June - Our rugby extravaganza day on 9th June seemed to be a great success with everyone. We managed our second junior training session followed by a great match against HMS Dauntless. Although we lost we put up a good show and the score line was close with both sides missing some good scoring chances. It was a great chance for many people to get a chance to play although the many changes to the team did disrupt us. Hopefully this will be the first of many such fixtures. The match was followed by a barbecue....
Thanks to everyone who attended and made it such a great day. Special thanks go to Stephane and Orsam for the kit and the canopy etc, thanks to Matthew and his guys for getting the pitch in condition to play a match...who would have thought we'd be playing on our pitch so soon!
1st June - The new club kit organised by Stephane has arrived in the country and is just waiting for customs clearance.
Also on the kits news the tackle bags etc should be delivered to SDV in the UK on Wednesday 6th ready for them to ship them to Ghana soon!
27th May - The final round of league matches took place today with some of our guys helping IDAS to a 12 all draw against Accra Sharks. This result ensured IDAS finished third in this years sevens league, well done guys!!! There was also news that a 15 a side tournament may start up in the next couple of months so we'll keep you all posted if that happens.
19th May - Saturday saw our first dedicated junior training session thanks to Chris. It certainly seemed like all the kids had a lot of fun so hopefully we can keep this going on a regular basis! Some photo's are on the photo page.
16th May - the site has now been registered with Google and should hopefully be moving up the rankings of the search results soon!
12th May - Great training session Saturday, good numbers with 26 and a visit from Nick, one of the clubs founding members! See you all next week.
28th April - 3 club members (Phillip Liverpool, Neil McMahon and Rob Oram) took part in the current Ghana Rugby Association Sevens League representing IDAS Sports. In the two matches IDAS secured a walk over due to the non appearance of Ketu Lions and a 33-0 victory over Teshie Spartans.
2018 has seen great attendance at training with, on average, 20-30 guys per session. This shows a strong and healthy club! The health of the club is also shown by the strong league season, this year finisihing runners up to reigning champions Conquerors. As well as the good run in the league ARC have just returned from a mini tour to Cote D'Ivoire where we faced our old friends Lamberts. Unfortunately we lost in extra time 10 - 5 but it was a great experience for everyone involved and we look forward to welcoming Lamberts back in Ghana next year!
